However, The Velvet Underground without Lou Reed was a totally different band to the one Atlantic Records had signed in 1969. These songs, they hoped, would feature on their fifth album. When The Velvet Underground returned home, they headed to Atlantic Records’ headquarters, where they showcased their new songs. During the tour, the members of The Velvet Underground wrote some new songs for the album they owed Atlantic Records.
This new lineup of The Velvet Underground spent part of 1971 touring North America. To play bass, Walter Power was drafted in. So bassist Doug Yule switched to bass and took charge of lead vocals. They were due to tour North America, promoting Loaded. This presented a problem for The Velvet Underground. By then, Lou Reed had left the group he had cofounded. They released their fourth studio album Loaded, on 15th November 1970. Instead, 1970 was The Velvet Underground’s annus horribilis. This should’ve been the dawn of a new era for The Velvet Underground, where they belatedly made a commercial breakthrough. They had just signed a two album deal with Atlantic Records in late 1969. (The album’s relative calm has often been attributed to the departure of the band’s most committed avant-gardist, John Cale, in the fall of 1968 the arrival of new bassist Doug Yule and the theft of the band’s amplifiers shortly before they began recording.) But Lou Reed’s lyrical exploration of the demimonde is as keen here as on any album he ever made, while displaying a warmth and compassion he sometimes denied his characters. After testing the limits of how musically and thematically challenging rock could be on Velvet Underground & Nico and White Light/White Heat, this 1969 release sounded spare, quiet, and contemplative, as if the previous albums documented some manic, speed-fueled party and this was the subdued morning after. Upon first release, the Velvet Underground’s self-titled third album must have surprised their fans nearly as much as their first two albums shocked the few mainstream music fans who heard them. The Velvet Underground ranked #6 on NME’s “Greatest Albums of All Time”. The work features the rock anthems “Candy Says,” “What Goes On,” “Some Kinda Love” and “Pale Blue Eyes.” It is included on Rolling Stone’s “500 Greatest Albums of All Time.” The album is a rich display of Lou Reed’s effortless songwriting abilities.
